Updates: July '18

It's been a busy month for the DesignHammer team! In addition to business as usual, we've also been giving a few overdue internal tasks some much needed TLC this summer. Reviving our newsletter and social media presence was just the first step of many efforts that we are taking to improve the DesignHammer brand, vision, and message. Be sure to keep up with us over the next following months to see what we have in store!

In Production

UNC Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media

Michael Nicholson

Recently we discussed the work we’ve been doing with UNC’s Center for Innovation and Sustainability in Local Media for their upcoming US News Deserts website. Just this month we’ve started also working on a redesign of their primary site, cislm.org. We’re excited to help simplify the management of their web properties and update the site with a new theme.

Tools and Technology

Browsersync

Frank Yonnetti

Browsersync is a great tool and important part of my daily workflow. Given the majority of my code writing is for user-facing work, I like to see it come together as I go along. So I use Browsersync to automatically update my web browser everytime I save my work. Additionally, it makes it very easy to share and test what I’m working on with the rest of the team and in multiple devices. I use Browsersync in combination with Gulp, which compiles my Scss to CSS and minifies my JS.

Community Involvement

DesignHammer Joins Raleigh PR Society

Hunter Kenny

As we are always looking for ways to get involved in various professional communities throughout the Triangle, it only made sense for DH partner David Minton and I to check out a summer unconference held by the Raleigh PR Society last week. The event was held at Mulino's Italian Kitchen & Bar, which is a hotspot for casual professional meetings–especially since being named "Best Outdoor Dining in Wake County by Indy Week earlier this month.

This meetup, dubbed an "unconference" as opposed to a formal conference, featured some great lightning speakers and inspired lively conversations amongst the intimate group of mainly PR professionals. The attendees represented businesses from a variety of industries and, as expected, did not shy away from telling us all about them. We had a great time enjoying Mulino's elegantly crafted cocktails, the classy outdoor patio, and engaging in conversations with our new PR peers. Now that the vetting process is over, we have every intention to join RPS in the near future.

Conferences

AENC Annual Conference

Stephen Pashby

David and I went to the Association Executives of North Carolina (AENC) 2018 Annual Meeting in Greenville, NC. Established in 1955, AENC provides professional development and networking opportunities for CEOs and staff of associations across North Carolina, as well as supporting industries. In addition to learning from several high-quality speakers, we were pleased to join in recognition of yearly awards for members of the AENC.

Anything Else

USA Fencing Summer National Championship

David and I competed in the USA Fencing Summer National Championships it St. Louis, MO held June 28 - July 7. David finished 15th in the Veteran 50 Men’s Saber National Championship and I finished 7th in the Veteran 40 Men’s Saber National Championship and 12th in the Veteran 40 Men’s Foil National Championship. We also finished 6th in the Veteran Men’s Saber Team competition (with our teammate Carl Badger, the Vet 60 National Champion!) and I finished 9th on a composite team in the Veteran Men’s Foil Team competition. In addition to competition and supporting our teammates at Mid-South Fencers Club, we sampled some St. Louis style BBQ at Sugarfire Smoke House and visited the Gateway Arch national monument.
