The Challenge

DesignHammer designed and developed a new website for NISS in August of 2009 built on Drupal 6. The new content management system allowed individuals at the organization to more easily modify content on their website without the assistance of a website developer. At the time, Drupal 6 was in the early stages of its release cycle. Seven years later, Drupal 6 had reached its end of life. During that time, the website had served NISS very well. However, with official support for the platform being discontinued, it was time to migrate the existing data to Drupal 7 and redesign the theme for a more modern look and feel.

The goal of this website redesign was to put NISS.org on a secure, supported system and to help build their business and customer base by acquiring new clients (academia, industry, and government), cultivating relationships with affiliates and postdocs, and giving their current staff the tools needed to facilitate the above.

The Solution

DesignHammer developed a new Drupal 7 website for NISS, built on supported technology which will function well for a years to come. This also allows DesignHammer to continue adding new functionality and improving existing features over time. The existing data from Drupal 6 was migrated over to Drupal 7 using the Migrate module's ability to map old content types and fields to new Drupal 7 content types and fields.

The Challenge

The existing website was originally designed in 1996 to provide access to the works and images of William Blake. The Archive provides scholars and the general public access to high quality color corrected images of Blake’s art as well as the text of Blake’s works, commentary, and research tools.

It was designed for scholars who want to study Blake as a professionally edited site, not to make Blake accessible to the lay user and amateur scholar. The Archive wanted to maintain this prestigious status, but also present a more contemporary, and user-friendly images to non-scholars.

The Solution

We created a slick, uncluttered interface to make all of the image information readily available. We then streamlined the navigation across the archive. To create this desired user interface, we engaged in several stages of web design: Wireframes, Design Concepts, and HTML/JS/CSS build out. The new site has a modern, easy to use interface, which brings forward the well crafted artwork William Blake had created.

The Labor Education and Research Project (popularly referred to as Labor Notes) serves as the voice of union activists in the labor movement. Since 1979, Labor Notes has promoted grassroots organization to empower union workers in transforming the labor system.

Through an online store, the organization offers magazine subscriptions, handbooks, and registration for conferences and workshops.

Previously, order information was manually entered into the organization's Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database. Besides creating significant overhead for Labor Notes staff, human error often caused duplicate customer entries.

Labor Notes wanted to reduce the amount of manual data entry and duplicate customer accounts, and to automate as much order fulfillment as possible.

We created an automated workflow to export customer information from the order form into Salesforce, a powerful online CRM tool used by thousands of companies and organizations. The end result is a simplified business process for managing subscribers and contacts.

We have database/ecommerce integration we could have only dreamed up. Our business manager can spend far more of her time filling orders and working with customers, rather than churning through piles of data-entry.

Case Study Intro:

Established in 2007, Vector Psychometric Group is a psychometric solutions company offering consulting and software.

Vector needed to better align its web presence with the professionalism of its staff and their accomplishments.

We created a WordPress website with a fresh design that better represented Vector. WordPress allows Vector staff to quickly publish web content without help from a developer. Users can find useful, relevant content through the redesigned modern interface.

Since the redesigned launched, Vector has experienced an improvement in its lead conversion rate.

I wanted a website that an executive director or CEO would look through and feel comfortable with our company. I think the new website is in align with who we are and our work.

Case Study Intro:

The Carolina Theatre of Durham presents more than 100 live performances in music, theater and dance, and shows nearly 3,000 screenings of films each year. Occupying a historic landmark building in downtown Durham, the Theatre has undergone revitalization to create a top-notch and inspiring experience for patrons.

As part of modernizing the film theater lobby, the Carolina Theatre wanted to update its lobby signage by creating a low-maintenance digital signage system. Before the update, printed signs were used that required a workflow relying on communication traveling through four internal departments. One misstep could cause problems at the box office, affecting business.

Utilizing data from the Theatre’s Drupal website, the new system displays daily showtimes on LCD panels and iPads inside the theater lobby. Film showtimes are entered once in Drupal and simultaneously updated on the Theatre’s website, iOS app, and lobby signage in a streamlined process.

We make one change on the website, and everything is updated at one time. In our business, there’s a lot to do and worry about, and having one less thing to do is invaluable.

Case Study Intro:

The UNC School of Government needed a system that would drastically reduce the amount of time between the print and electronic releases of its publication North Carolina Crimes: A Guidebook on the Elements of Crime. Using the Drupal platform, we created a custom system that allows for same-day release of the electronic and print editions of NC Crimes, an 800-page book with thousands of cross-references.

When we published the 2012 supplement edition in February 2013, the updated online edition was launched live on 2/6/13, and the print edition arrived from the printer on 2/14/13. We are very pleased with the professional quality of DesignHammer’s work and their top-notch customer service.
