While many organizations are interested in the concept of having an accessible website, they often do not understand the holistic nature of creating and maintaining an accessible website. In our experience, accessibility must be a team effort between between a web team and the content creators, and it can't stop once an accessible website launches.

Last year I started thinking about the similarities between Usability, Accessibility, and SEO, and posted the first of what I hoped to be a series of articles on the subject. Since then, I assembled a talk, which I presented at BarCampRDU in 2009 and 2010 and am preparing to give at Internet Summit 2010 in Raleigh this week. This post will provide some additional resources as well as a copy of my slides.

Providing website accessibility for the visual and hearing impaired is a task that organizations tend to classify as just some technical or legal requirements that have to be met. Some organizations don't even consider accessibility at all. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to guest lecture before the Web Design students at Wake Technical Community College on the similarities between Usability, Accessibility, and SEO, a topic I first addressed here in 2009. Since my initial blog post, I assembled a talk, which I presented at BarCampRDU, and at Internet Summit 2010 in Raleigh last November.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2018 is today, May 17! To celebrate the occasion, I’ll be attending the a11yRTP meetup Accessibility Unconference at the SAS Institute campus in Cary, NC. As an "unconference", there will not be any planned sessions. Participants will suggest topics, and sessions will then be selected based on mutual interest. Two of the topics I hope to be able to participate in are the upcoming WCAG 2.1, as well as a review of recent and pending Web accessibility legal cases.

I had the pleasure of presenting at the January meeting of the NCTech4Good Meetup held at the offices of United Way of the Greater Triangle in Morrisville, NC. The talk covered similarities between Usability, Accessibility, and SEO, a topic I first addressed here in 2009. Since my initial blog post, I assembled a talk, which I have presented at multiple venues, inclusing BarCampRDU, Internet Summit in Raleigh, as well as Wake Technical Community College.

What could Usability, Accessibility, and SEO (search engine optimization) have in common? Besides industry jargon that website designers/developers need to know, they are in some ways three aspects of the same process.

We have a diverse assortment of topics covered this week: favorite accessibility tools, empathy in the workplace, and user experience driving design.
